Co-Op Begins Tomorrow (9/1/10)
By Charlotte Cushman | August 31, 2010
From Melissa Carter:
This Wednesday is the big day! Excitement is in the air along with many questions, I’m sure. Folks will be in the atrium early on Wednesday to get people signed in, take payments ($20), preferably cash because we will be working on a petty cash system, assign posts for those parents not already assigned one and answer questions.
That brings me to some needs for the co-op. Specifically, we are looking for those with the gift of administration. The co-op needs a treasurer; some accounting experience would be nice, but not necessary. Also, I would like to find at least one administrative helper for Terry Beach, who has graciously taken on the rosters so far. If you are interested in either of these billets, please let me know ASAP.
Make sure that you fill out your forms and have your students sign them. We covet your prayers and patience as we seek to equip the next generation and strive for excellence in their education!
God Bless,
Melissa Carter

Civil Air Patrol Open House Thursday Sept 2nd
By Charlotte Cushman | August 29, 2010
Contact person: Barbara Griswold:
A few updates to the CAP Open House announcement (which appears below this update):
1. The Lowcountry Squadron is open to all Beaufort County girls and boys, ages 12 to 18. Our cadets reside in HH, Beaufort, and everywhere in between.
2. The group meets every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the old HH Airport on Gateway Circle, off Dillon Rd. Meeting attendance is encouraged, but not required. Some field trips and other events take place on weekends.
3. If you have questions about the open house or about CAP in general, you may call Captain Roger Kelly at 654-2500. He’s a great guy!
On Thursday, Sept. 2, from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. at the OLD Hilton Head Airport (off Dillon Rd.), the Lowcountry Squadron of Civil Air Patrol will hold an Open House (informational meeting) for Lowcountry homeschoolers. The CAP cadet program is open to boys and girls ages 12 – 18, and offers the following benefits and activities:
- aerospace education (hands-on projects incorporating history,
math, science, social studies, economics, and geography)
- survival training
- search and rescue
- leadership training
- radio communications
- model rocketry
- flight training (during one field trip, the cadets got to “fly” the F-18 simulator at the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort!)
- first aid and CPR
- sports, drill, and every mother’s favorite — physical fitness!
You can learn more about CAP by going to the state and national websites:
www.sccadets.org (state)
www.gocivilairpatrol.com (national)
You can also contact me, Barbara Griswold, at hsgl_102@yahoo.com . My son joined in two years ago, and I’d be glad to answer your questions. I’ll also be helping at the Open House.
CAP is very big among homeschoolers all over the country, and it’s not just because of their cool uniforms. The program is surprisingly inexpensive (membership is $30/year – your tax dollars at work!); the activities work well with homeschoolers’ schedules (you can put as much or as little time into it as you wish, depending on how quickly you want to advance); and it offers homeschooled students many opportunities for extracurricular activities and accomplishments (very important for high school transcripts).
The reason I’m telling you all about this is that I know from experience how difficult it can be to continue homeschooling as our kids get into the middle- and high-school grades, especially if you have little ones at home. Sometimes it’s hard to find wholesome activities that older kids enjoy. Because this CAP cadet program addresses so many of the “special needs” experienced by older homeschooled students, I wanted to tell other families. Our son has found it to be the perfect combination of discipline, responsibility, and fun; perhaps your son or daughter would, too. (Siblings and friends of homeschoolers are welcome, as long as they’re at least 12 years old. Of course, CAP is open to students who attend public or private schools.)
If you need directions to the OLD Hilton Head Airport, see the directions below. Also, if you think you’re coming on the 2nd, please let me know so that the CAP folks know approximately how many to expect. But you’re welcome to come even if you don’t RSVP.

hsgl_102@yahoo.com
Directions to CAP meeting from the bridge: Take 278 South onto HHI. Go past HH Plantation and the Mathews Drive intersection. At the next light, turn left onto Dillon Rd. (this is the intersection where, if you turned right, you’d be in the MacDonald’s/Pizza Hut/Sam’s Club shopping plaza). Turn left onto Gateway Circle (where the dump is…oops, I mean the “Convenience Center”). Rather than turning right for the dump, go straight ahead to the small gray building. This is called the Hilton Head FBO — “fixed base of operations.” Get ready for lots of acronyms!

Poles needed for tether ball – Presidential
By Charlotte Cushman | August 27, 2010
From Terry Beach:
We are hoping to possibly add one or two tether ball games at the church for the Presidential participants to play when they are done with their activities. I was wondering if anyone might have a couple of 12 foot metal poles, 2 inches in diameter. Even a tether ball set or two would work also. If you can let me know, I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Terry Beach ctbeach@charter.net 525-1379
